Flood gate
Flood gate
The Ouse Washes are there for draining the surrounding fenland so in wet periods the water level rises significantly and the roads that cross them are flooded, hence the gates there ready. In contrast, the railway is raised above the flood level and a raised footpath crosses the washes by this road.
