Newburgh - ancient and modern landscapes
Newburgh - ancient and modern landscapes
This landscape around the Ythan estuary shows features from very different times. The windmills on the horizon have been erected in the last few weeks. The marram covered mounds in the bottom left of the photograph are huge middens of mussel shells. Excavations over the summer have revealed that they date back to Pictish (Roman) times. The mounds contain pits full of burnt wood with stones piled on top. It seems that the ancients were steaming mussels by heating the stones, throwing on piles of mussels and then dousing in water.
