SO5175 : Former Scout Hut, Julian Road - for sale

taken 14 years ago, near to Ludlow, Shropshire, England

Former Scout Hut, Julian Road - for sale
Former Scout Hut, Julian Road - for sale
Former home of the First Ludlow Scouts. Pre 1930s maps show an earlier use of the building as a Roman Catholic Church, and the website for St Peters RC Church, built in the 1930s, refers to a previous church, Julian Hall, which presumably was therefore this building. The website also refers to the East Window at St Peters coming from Julian Hall, and dating it as 1906. This is consistent with this style of building (which has the appearance of a "tin tabernacle", as frequently used about that time to build mission halls, although a difference is that this building has more solid walls).

Compare SO5175 : Former Scout Hut, Julian Road - here it is shown with "For sale" signs. The building has since been demolished, with planning permission granted for the site to be developed for residential use - see SO5175 : Site of former Scout Hut, Julian Road for a later view of the site.
Tin tabernacles

"Tin tabernacles" (or more properly "iron churches") were produced in large numbers from the mid 19th Century into the early 20th Century. They were built with a timber frame, clad with galvanised and corrugated iron, and lined with tongue and groove boarding. Prepared as prefabricated kits, they were also exported to many countries overseas.
