Overhead power line works near Fenton
Taken at the same spot at this one: NT9633 : Farmland near Fenton.
Down every minor road I travelled in Northumberland, no matter how small, I seemed to pass these works signs and 'goalposts'.
A detailed sign on the gate revealed that they are related to work on overhead transmission lines for the National Grid Company, stretching from the Scottish Borders to Newcastle. The work includes, "foundation installation and upgrading, steelwork replacement, tower erection, installation of safe climbing system, insulator replacement, phase conductor and earthwire replacement."
Clearly this entails constructing numerous proper access roads to out of the way places. The project started in November 2007 and is scheduled to last for 3 years, involving a maximum of 250 workers at any one time.
Attached to the 'goalpost' is a warning sign:
"DANGER
OVERHEAD POWER LINE
MAXIMUM HEIGHT FOR SAFE PASSAGE
5m
REMOVAL OF THE GOALPOST WITHOUT
PRIOR WARNING COULD PROVE
DANGEROUS TO OTHERS
IF YOUR VEHICLE DOES NOT FIT PLEASE CONTACT"
No contact details are given so anyone with a large vehicle could be waiting some time for the goalposts to be moved, which could be construed as a case of, er, moving the goalposts.
