The shingled spire of the church at Thursley
Seen from a distance the cladding of this spire might be mistaken for slate. The 'tiles' are in fact shingles - little wooden slabs. I should be interested to know which timber is used for this purpose, and what accounts for the grey appearance. The result must be reasonably weather-proof, but there have been reports in the county of shingled spires being attacked by woodpeckers. Another example of a shingled spire is at
