NZ2464 : Darn Crook (St Andrew Street) from Newgate Street
taken 15 years ago, near to Newcastle Upon Tyne, England

Darn Crook (St Andrew Street) from Newgate Street
The council decided to change the name from its former 'Darn Crook' to the more gentile 'St Andrew Street' although many locals still use the old name. The name probably refers to its original state as a dark and crooked lane and hopefully not to the reputation of its shopkeepers. It was a cul-de-sac until 1810, blocked at the north end by the town wall. In the 1800s it was an industrial area of tanneries, slaters and other noxious works.
A Geordie poem tells the tale of one of its inhabitants:
"I’ the toon of Newcastle James Archbold did dwell
He’s a slater te trade, and thinks ne small beer on hissel;
And in Gallowgate, just aside the Darn Crook,
Stands his house amang smells that was make a horse puke."
