Field near Walton Farm
See NS3678 : Field near Walton Farm for another view, showing the part of the field that is, in the present photo, behind the photographer's position.
Before the Second World War, this field was a part of Walton Wood. A narrow strip of the wood also extended along the western edge of the field that is visible in the background. That strip corresponds to the area where a few trees can be seen in the middle distance; it is shown in NS3678 : Former woodland at edge of field and NS3678 : Former woodland at edge of field. An ancient burial chamber is located there (see the last-cited link).
At the time of the first-edition OS map (c.1860), the wood extended much further to the east, over what is now a fairly damp grass- and gorse-covered slope, as far as the dry-stone wall that appears in NS3778 : Moorland above Kipperoch Farm. That additional portion of the wood had been cleared away by the end of the nineteenth century.
The Firth of Clyde is visible in the background.
