Walton Farm chambered cairn
See NS3678 : Walton Farm chambered cairn for the main description.
The base of a large stone can be seen at the top of the image; this is the stone that is prominent in the photo accompanying the main description. It was possibly a portal stone, and it stands about 1.65 metres tall. In front of its base, in the present photo, is a stone that is about 90cm tall, and up to 55cm wide; its near side has a conspicuously flat surface. The pit measures about 1.4m by 1.2m.
The main description mentions some unauthorised disturbance of the site, but the chamber was interfered with once again in 2010 (not to be deterred by the fact that it had already been fully excavated in 1954), as seen by comparing the appearance of the pit in the present photo with that in the earlier photo that accompanies the main description. As on the previous occasion, this was an unauthorised disturbance of the site; it was not carried out by the landowners, nor was it sanctioned by them.
[Compare the disturbance to some other sites not long after I had first submitted photographs of them to Geograph: NS4581 : Notice beside the Lang Cairn and NS4276 : Remains of a turbine house. I would therefore not be surprised if the same person or persons are responsible for more than one of these incidents. High-profile reporting, over the last year or two, of spectacular finds made (with the landowner's permission) in various locations by metal-detecting amateurs has perhaps led to unauthorised digging by a few unscrupulous individuals. Any such readers should therefore note that there are no hidden riches waiting to be discovered here, or at any of the other sites that I've visited and photographed.]
