The first Wearmouth Bridge was built in 1796 and was the catalyst for growth of Sunderland. It was rebuilt by Robert Stephenson in 1857. The present steel-arch bridge was built in 1927 to a design by Mott, Hay and Anderson LinkExternal link
Below the bridge, on the north bank left of the bridge pier, you can just see the art installation, 'Second Sun' by Andrew Small (2009) made up of a dome on top of a grey metal tripod.

A redevelopment of the old Sunderland Harbour area on the north bank at the mouth of the River Wear. This was once a industrial and shipbuilding area before dereliction and redevelopment.
