'Pathways of Knowledge' by Colin Wilbourn, University of Sunderland
Unveiled by Her Majesty the Queen on 18th May 1993, this sculpture in yellow sandstone is of a pile of books featuring one at the end open which has a relief carving of Bede on the left and a coloured mosaic inlay on the right as an illuminated manuscript from the former monastery at nearby St Peter's Church. Standing as it does by the door of the library of St Peter's campus of the University of Sunderland, close to the path on the north side of the River Wear, it represents the continuing tradition of a centre of learning in this location.
