Out of plumb: old fenland pump-engine house at Upware
This tottering old building must once have housed an engine which drove pumps working to lower the water level in the surrounding fens. As such it had a hand in its own downfall - as peaty soil dries out it shrinks, and a building which started off on an even keel ends up looking like this.
The fens have their own vocabulary. Many of the tracks are 'droves', while the channel in the foreground is a 'lode' - in this instance, Reach Lode, which connects the villages of Reach and Burwell with the River Cam. Note the abundant growth of reeds, Phragmites.
