Bus in The Street
One of Maggie's more controversial statements, she claimed "anyone over the age of 26 still using a bus can consider themselves a failure". Mea culpa! The first public ‘bus” line was launched in France in 1662 when Blaise Pascal developed a system of horse-drawn carriages that ran across Paris streets on schedule. The first significant omnibus improvement was achieved by laying rails over the existing routes which made them far easier for horses to pull. My father is not quite that old, but he can remember trolley buses which derived their power from overhead wires. I love them all, big, small, ancient or modern. And what's more I will be using the coming electric versions until I "go on", hopefully in a specially commissioned Routemaster Hearse!
See other images of Mrs Thatcher notwithstanding, still my favourite way to travel
