Swan herding at Bear Mead, Dorset
Swan herding at Bear Mead, Dorset
Over 25 young swans (under 2 years old) chose a bad spot to socialize on the Dorset Stour at Bear Mead. A 12 year old male swan (ID=KUB, extreme right) who has raised over 8 families at this spot, considered the area his territory, arched his neck and wings in a fine display of aggression, and drove the youngsters upstream and away. This river bank has slow current, a 'swan island' at summer levels on which KUB builds his nest, and is easy to climb up the bank onto well-cut grass for roosting. The river is shallow here, weed for feeding is easily reached with a long neck. Kayakers in summer must run the gauntlet of a very territorial KUB, and many turn back.
