Priestyard
Priestyard
The area shown here is associated with Maryland Farm, part of whose buildings can be seen at the right-hand edge of the image (the rest of these buildings are, in any case, surrounded by trees). The single building standing to their left is a house called Priestyard.

When the OS Object Name Book was compiled, in the nineteenth century, Priestyard was the property of a Mr McKenzie or McKinzie, a writer (lawyer) from Glasgow, while neighbouring Maryland was the property of Robert Dixon of Levengrove: Link

"Some names in Dumbarton and district are associated with the Collegiate Church of St Mary ... Ladyton in Bonhill was so called as it first belonged to the Chapel of St Mary and passed to the Collegiate Church in 1453; and Maryland, a farm near Dumbarton, beside which there is a house called Priestyard, also seems to have been the property of the Collegiate Church of St Mary" ["Dumbarton Through the Centuries", I.M.M.MacPhail, 1972].

For more on the Collegiate Church mentioned above, and the earlier Chapel of St Mary, see NS3975 : The College Bow.

The photograph was taken from the northern edge of NS4177 : Barr Wood. The Lang Craigs are visible in the background: NS4376 : Lang Craigs and NS4376 : The Long Crags.
