Hainford All Saints ruined church
This lovely ruin stands over the graveyard of its former self, which is still in use. When the new church was built in 1840 this church was unroofed and left to decay, leaving the tower as a landmark. That too has begun to crumble. A fence now surrounds the tower with notices warning of falling masonry. The church dates from the late 13th century and the tower from the 15th. The reason for its demise is not clear but it seems the architect concerned decided that there was more profit in building a new church rather than preserving the old one. It was decided to continue to use the burial ground and a mortuary chapel was constructed against the tower arch. This too has collapsed due to neglect, and the birds and other creatures now make their home there. A fitting end to any church.
