Betchworth Station in snow - the view west
Christmas Day, so there are no trains. Betchworth station lies some distance north of the village, on the lower slopes of the North Downs escarpment. It is served by the Reading, Guildford and Reigate line - one of very few in the south-east which run cross-country, not part of the radial pattern which has London as its hub. There is a good reason for this. The first railway to reach Dover from London (in 1844) was the South Eastern, the route running by way of Redhill, Tonbridge and Ashford. In 1849 the same company opened a link from Redhill to the GWR at Reading, a crafty move calculated to capture cross-Channel traffic originating from Wales and the west of England. Betchworth, I reckon, just happened to lie close to the route.

The upper storey of the station house would seem to be timber framed, 'jettied' out over the ground floor, with projecting joists.

For a view of the scene as it was 50 years ago, with old-style level-crossing gates, see TQ2151 : Betchworth Station. For the view in the other direction (on this Christmas Day), see TQ2151 : The view eastward from Betchworth Station
