Home of Ethel Gordon Fenwick at 20 Upper Wimpole Street
Blue plaque indicating the residence of the nursing reformer Ethel Gordon Fenwick (1857-1947). The daughter of a wealthy Scottish family, she trained as a nurse and became matron of St Bartholomew's Hospital at the age of only 24, a post she had to resign when she married Dr Fenwick in 1887 which was the year she came to live here. She promoted the training and qualification of nurses and safeguarded the use of the term 'nurse' as a professional title, she herself being registered as Nurse Number 1.
