The Ben Vrackie Goats (R.I.P.)
While resting near the summit of the hill with a companion for a bite to eat, a couple of goats suddenly appeared intent on joining in our grub stop. They were very persistent despite the defensive use of walking poles and walking boots and one actually unzipped the side pocket of my friend’s rucksack and scoffed a banana. We had quite a laugh at this but decided to pack up and they followed us to the summit where we were entertained to a display of head butting. These goats were the subject of an article in The Angry Corrie hill walker’s magazine (Issue 12 April/May 1993) where their SAS-style ambushes on unsuspecting walkers was described in detail. Although they were not feral goats they had been frequenting the hill as early as 1992, but sadly they are no longer with us.
