In "The Story of the Vale of Leven" (1975), J.Agnew discusses the communications between Dumbarton and the villages of the Vale of Leven. Regarding the road network, the author comments that "horse troughs were placed at intervals along these roads, being as necessary then as garages are now. They were built at springs. One was halfway between Dalreoch and Renton, ..." (that one is shown in the photograph). After describing the location of other troughs, the same work notes that "all were fitted with iron ladles for the use of drivers and pedestrians".
