Flooded quarry by Bollihope Burn
The quarry is separated from the Bollihope Burn by a series of spoil heaps which, in addition to forming convenient viewpoints, seem to be heavily used by bikers, eroding steep trails up to and down from their conical summits. The quarry has been excavated pretty much as deep as it can go, down to the level of the stream, and is now flooded, with numerous pools between the spoil tips, but some very good paths and tracks between. It looks as though a half-decent ice-climb forms on the north-facing wall of the quarry, but it was in decay when I took this photo after the thaw had set in, providing us with a trip paddling snowmelt on the River Wear.
