Martyrdom of Patrick Hamilton
Martyrdom of Patrick Hamilton
Patrick Hamilton (1504-1528) was an early Protestant reformer in Scotland, having absorbed the teachings of Martin Luther whilst studying in Paris and Louvain. On his return to Scotland, the young reformer began preaching the tenets of Lutheran ideology and started to attract a growing following. On the orders of James Beaton, Archbishop of St Andrews, Patrick Hamilton was burned to death on this spot for heresy.
