Polesden Lacey: “Pocket-Handkerchief Tree” in flower
The Dove Tree, whose two varieties are the only members of the genus Davidiae, is also known as the “Pocket-Handkerchief Tree” from the form of its flowers, which appear in late May. It is a native of China; its Latin name is a tribute to Father Armand David, the first Westerner to describe it (after whom Père David’s Deer is also named).
