These marshes, on the Kent side of the Thames Estuary, lie in one of the most remote corners of south-east England - certainly in terms of access from the landward side. Given the dangers of working with explosives, a remote site was a natural choice for their storage and manufacture.

Only a few of the many ruined structures in TQ7278 can be seen in this shot - the various installations were built at some distance from one another, for obvious reasons. The structures seen here are later than those further west in TQ7178 : Ruins of the explosives works, near Lower Hope Point (1); those are mostly brick-built, these are reinforced concrete.

Despite recent developments in the so-called 'Thames Gateway', these marshes are still pretty inaccessible - little known and little visited. As a consequence, suggestions that an airport could be sited here have not gone away entirely. It must not be forgotten that the Roskill Commission, back in the 1970's, ranked a nearby site on Halstow Marshes at the very bottom of their 'middle list' of 29 options - and those were days when the wildlife value of wetland areas was less fully recognised.
