Approaching disaster over Coniston
Approaching disaster over Coniston
Why is this fairly ordinary picture of a storm approaching over the Old Man of Coniston significant? Why? Because it had just started to rain. It had just started - about mid afternoon - and wasn't going to stop until, by three days later, Cockermouth had been completely inundated. This was no ordinary weather front. It was about to take at least one human life, that of PC Bill Barker, and those of scores of animals. It was to destroy property, businesses and structures that had stood for hundred of years. Doesn't look that special, does it?
