Citadel Chambers, Carlisle
This fine five-storey Arts and Crafts building has been almost ruined by modern functional adaptations. It was built as a hotel. I worked in this building in the early 1970s. It still had many original internal features like Art Nouveau fireplaces. It was a warren, not very suited to its use. The main entrance was below the high door canopy in Citadel Row, the alley at the side of the building.
The building recently housed a temporary police station when Carlisle was flooded. It was sold for £400,000 in September 2010. Conversion of the three upper floors to housing use has been proposed.
