Originally the Staffordshire College of Technology the college became part of the North Staffordshire Polytechnic in 1970. Renamed as the Staffordshire Polytechnic in 1991 it became the Staffordshire University in 1994.
From 1965 the Staffordshire College of Technology ran one of the first degree courses in Computing and for several years was the home of a working DEUCE (Digital Electronic Universal Computing Engine) computer.
At the time this photograph was taken many students at the polytechnic lived in a tower block on the other side of the town called Brooke Court (which was adjacent to SJ9021 : Binyon Court).
