Keys to the Past Web Site: A large bank of 20th century lime kilns are built into the hillside and were probably worked until at least the mid-20th century. There are two oval, brick-lined pots within a rectangular block of sandstone masonry. Two barrel vaulted draw arches give access to the pots and each arch has two draw eyes. A short length of tramway connected the kilns to Thorn Green Quarry to the north. The kilns have a number of unusual design elements and the twin pots are a rare feature in the North Pennines area. This is a Grade II Listed Building protected by law.
