Whittle Dene consists of seven small lakes between 1845 and 1888 the Whittle Dene Complex was the first part of the system to be completed it wasn't until 1906 that Catcleugh was finished to complete the chain today it supplies 25 million gallons Of water each day The reservoirs which are located on both sides of the B6318 Military road about 5 miles west of Heddon-on-the-wall and about 6 miles from Corbridge the lakes are also popular leisure haunts with excellent coarse and Trout fishing.
