Rubble, possibly from Brickfield Cottage
For the main description of this area, which was formerly a brickfield, see NS3976 : Cycle route beside former brickfield. As for context, the rubble shown here is located just to the west of that cycle route, and just inside the NS3976 : The edge of the woods; there, the ground level falls away sharply to that of the adjacent field.

As the main description notes, a few mounds of rubble like this, and (perhaps) the opening to a drain, appear to be the only traces of Brickfield Cottage, which was removed before the Second World War. The flat area at the top of the slope was subsequently planted with trees; it is possible that some of the remaining rubble from the cottage was cleared away onto this slope. Some more stones are visible just outside the edge of the woods.

The material looks rather industrial; however, in 1892, the building that stood here was beside lime-kilns and a sand pit, and presumably was originally associated with the brickfield. On the 1918 map, the lime-kilns are gone (the brickworks themselves, about 180 metres to the NNW, disappeared before 1900), and the building is named as Brickfield Cottage, perhaps indicating a change to residential use.

"Lime Works" are marked here on a plan of the River Leven made in 1824, showing that they long pre-date the 1890s.
