A late splash of summer colour in the morning sunshine. These are old mill workers' cottages. There were many cotton mills in the Woodend area years ago but now they have all been demolished to make way for housing development.
SD9410 : Cottages at Woodend , Shaw I think from the overall styling of these cottages that they are former "weaver's cottages" so the work was done in the cottages. workers in the mills may have lived there later. The looms were upstairs and there were almost continous windows (later partly infilled) to provide adequate lighting. These are very common in upland textile areas and a good set are at Golcar in W Yorkshire. I would welcome further comments/criticism/etc.
