The photograph shows Main Street at a time when vehicles could still be driven passed the Queens Head Hotel.
The sign on the side of the building reads 'The Queens Head Hotel • RESIDENTIAL • HARTLEYS PRIZE ALES'

Beyond the hotel is a news agents shop and John Haselhurst's (1907–1989) chemist shop.
(St Michael and All Angels, Hawkshead - Memorial Inscriptions & Roll of Honour - LinkExternal link PDF.)

The road off to the left is Flag Street and to the right, by the side of the hotel, is Victoria Street.
