Marsh landscape near Lower Hope Point
Marsh landscape near Lower Hope Point
Looking north-eastward, late on a February afternoon, along a delph* which runs parallel to the sea wall. It is the sea wall, of course, which defines the skyline in a marsh-scape like this. In the original photograph it is possible to make out the marker stone at Lower Hope Point, showing above the sea wall just to the right of the trunk of the nearest tree.

* By delph I mean a broad ditch from which soil was taken when the sea wall was first raised. If the word sounds a bit Dutch, that may well be because Dutch engineers were involved in much of the early drainage work in the Fens and along the North Sea coast.
