The marshes here, around the old explosives works, are among the roughest - least 'improved' - in the Grain peninsula. Further east, between Cooling village and Egypt and St Mary's Bays, greater effort was put into drainage, with grazing marshes being turned over to arable. These marshes remain very wet, with many small pools, reedbeds, areas of rushes. They provide grazing for large numbers of sheep and horses.

The ruins on the left may well have started off as an entry point to the explosives works (traces visible further to the right). I remember them as being in fairly sound condition, though uninhabited, in the mid-1970's. The name 'The Poplars' appears on mid-20th century OS maps - which would suggest there was once a farmyard here. (For a view from another angle, see: TQ7178 : Cliffe Marshes: the ruins at 'The Poplars', seen from the north-east).

The track in the foreground is known locally as the Point Gates Road - 'Point' no doubt referring to Lower Hope Point. It must once have been part of a made-up road linking Cliffe village with the explosives works site. Frost and rough use have left it as a cratered rubble track - very rough nearer the village.
