Garth Youth Hostel in 1972, Perth and Kinross
Seen lit by watery morning sunshine on January 1st or 2nd in 1972 (or possibly 1971). I had been a designated tall (I am not very), dark (I was not very) stranger (they knew me already!) at midnight with a lump of coal that they gave me! God bless you, Betty Wallis! :-)
This huge country house was built circa 1838 and extended in the same (Gothic) style circa 1880. The house was gifted by the then owner Mrs. MacKenzie Anderson in 1951 to The Scottish Youth Hostel Association in memory of her son who was killed in action in 1940. It was sold by the SYHA in 1983(?) for a mere £18,000 with all its land. This Grade II listed building was riddled with dry rot, and it was unrealistic for the association to pay the enormous cost of repairing and maintaining it.
