SK2631 : Etwall: St Helen

Etwall: St Helen
This handsome church dates mainly from the 14th century, and has some very late Perpendicular south windows, dating, Nikolaus Pevsner thought, from the 17th or 18th centuries. A brass commemorates Sir John Port, the founder of Repton School (for fifteen poor boys of neighbouring parishes), whose name was given to the comprehensive school just to the south of the church and almshouses. Before the village was by-passed, this was a busy and awkward corner on the Derby to Uttoxeter road.

(The picture dates from the days when I carted two cameras about, one loaded with FP4 film, to achieve only modest black-and-white results for the most part.)
