Houghton Mill, Cambridgeshire
This building was probably built in the 18th century, and was extended in the 19th century. Commercial milling stopped during the 1930s. Local people bought it and gave it to the National Trust. From 1934 the mill was in use as a youth hostel, and was, at that time, one of the few YHA establishments where smoking was forbidden because of fire hazard. It closed as a hostel in 1982(?) and since 1999 when a new wheel was installed, milling of corn has resumed as a tourist attraction. The YHA's fire escape structure on the left of the mill here has now gone.
