Pollit & Wigzell Tandem Compound Mill Engine
Pollit & Wigzell Tandem Compound Mill Engine
Built by Pollit & Wigzell of Sowerby Bridge in 1909 for the engineering department at Manchester University. Most engineering departments had a steam engine, this example being used in the thermodynamics lab. The brake wheel has a groove in the middle for extra cooling. The condenser is also different; instead of injecting cold water straight into the used steam, it cools the steam externally so that it doesn't affect the testing of steam usage, etc.
