TF3243 : 120 High Street, Boston

taken 14 years ago, near to Boston, Lincolnshire, England

120 High Street, Boston
120 High Street, Boston
A particularly fine mid-Georgian house of five bays, three storeys with painted keystones above the windows and a Rococo cartouche in the pediment. Later wings on either side (see also here: TF3243 : Franklin's Lodge). The listing records that it was the home of the Claypon family of Garfitts and Claypon Bank of Boston. It is now flats. Grade II* listed.
On the right is part of a curious terrace, either late C17th or early C18th, with a facade divided by giant pilasters. It is now flats, but its original purpose is a mystery. Grade II* listed.
The southern section of the High Street, which is dotted with good Georgian houses, is now bypassed and whilst it has undoubtedly improved the traffic situation it has left the area with a general air of neglect and gentle decay.
