St Kentigerns Church, Edinburgh
St Kentigerns Church, Edinburgh, is a former Episcopalian church which is surrounded by the on-going development of Fountainbridge and the Union Canal.
Built in 1897, it was designed by John More Dick Peddie, a prolific Scottish architect working at the end of the 19th century and the designer of the striking Caledonian Hotel building in Edinburgh. It ceased to be used as a church in 1941 and was subsequently used as a nursery and a garage. The church is now threatened with demolition to make way for a three storey building for housing (18 apartments), restaurant and bar. However, the Edinburgh heritage body, the Cockburn Association have objected to this proposal on the grounds that the church is one of the few buildings of historic interest on this section of the canal.
