Market Place, Devizes (2)
Looking east from Station Road. Most of the buildings here are listed.
In the centre is the Market Cross, designed by Benjamin Dean Wyatt (the listing incorrectly states James Wyatt) and L.J. Abington in 1814, and paid for by the local M.P. Henry Addington. The listing records that it "commemorates the awful story of Ruth Pierce, who wished she might drop dead if she had not paid her share of a sack of corn. Having said so 3 times, she dropped dead, and the money was found in her hand." Grade II* listed.
