The ruins of Garshake Corn Mill
The ruins of Garshake Corn Mill
The arch visible on the left is part of the bridge that is shown in NS4176 : Track to Garshake Farm; that bridge crosses NS4176 : The Garshake Burn.

In the present photograph, the ruins on the right are the remains of a corn mill, located just downstream from the bridge, on the eastern side of the burn. The sudden fall in the level of the burn at that point, as seen in the left-hand side of the image, is clearly something that would have been exploited.

For a view in the opposite direction, see NS4176 : The ruins of Garshake Corn Mill.

The mill can be seen from the western side of the burn, or from the bridge, but the photographic prospects from those locations are limited. It requires rather more agility to reach the point from which this photograph was taken, down at the eastern side of the burn, but the effort is rewarded with a relatively unobstructed view.

In the ruins of the mill, some crumbling mortar is still present between the large stone blocks that make up the structure. The stones differ greatly in size, and it is hard to get a sense of scale from the photograph alone, but the largest blocks visible in this picture are about 1.3 metres (or over 4 feet) across.
Garshake Corn Mill
The mill stood on the east side of the Garshake Burn, which powered it; its ruins are visible just downstream of a bridge over the burn. It is labelled "T. Mill" on the first-edition OS map (1860), "Corn Mill" on the second-edition map (c.1898), and "Corn Mill (disused)" on the 1918 map revision. Legal proceedings from 1904 mention "the Old Corn Mill on the east side of Garshake Burn", the "Old" perhaps indicating that the mill was by then disused.
