Am Bearag, The Salmon Bothy
Am Bearag, The Salmon Bothy
Until 1994, Clachtoll was the scene of a salmon fishing station. The bothy which was used as shelter whilst waiting for the tides and weather, has now been turned into a small heritage centre. The closure followed a decline in the number of salmon caught in the rivers which obviously meant a loss in commercial value to the estates. I heard locally that the method of fishing at the station was not very efficient and had been sustainable for two hundred years. So there is some doubt about the supposed decline.
The poles on the left are where the nets were dried and repaired.
