This lighthouse on Berneray, the southernmost island of the Outer Hebrides, was built by Robert Stevenson and completed in 1833. Whilst it is known as Barra Head lighthouse, it is actually situated at Skate Point, about a mile north-west of Barra Head. From 1931 until 1980 when the light was automated, the lighthouse keepers and their families were the only residents on the island. Mingulay is the next island to the north, whilst Pabbay, Sandray and Barra are also visible.
