Rhododendron Mile, Puddletown Forest
The road through Puddletown Forest used to be lined with rhododendron ponticum and in spring the mauve flowers drew lots of people to see them, including my family when I lived in Dorchester many years ago.
During 2009 and 2010 a wide swathe either side of the road on the right in this image was cleared to stop this non-native invasive plant spreading into the pine monoculture of this planted commercial forest, although many local people were upset at the wholesale removal. There was also a desire to increase the safety of forest users and I understand that a small but useful reduction in anti-social activities has taken place.
