Lord North Street
Lord North Street
A very well-preserved street of houses dating from 1726, built by John Mackreth. Almost all the houses in the street are Grade II* listed. The view is from the north portico of St John, Smith Square, and is pretty much the reverse of this view: TQ3079 : St John, Smith Square (2).
Lord North Street is part of a particularly fine sequence of early-Georgian buildings which runs from St John itself up to Barton Street.
The facing buildings are numbers 5 and 6 Smith Square. A stone panel under the right-hand second floor window of number 5 is inscribed with the words, "Smith Square 1726".
The building closing the view is Horace Field's neo-Georgian offices for the North Eastern Railway in Cowley Street, 1904-05, currently the headquarters of the Liberal Democrats. (Update @2018 - the Lib Dems have moved out and the building has been restored as a private residence, available for purchase at 36m, or, in a unique try-before-you-buy arrangement, for rental at 1m a year.)
