Old army camp, Newbattle Abbey
Old army camp, Newbattle Abbey
An old army camp seen through its perimeter fence in the grounds of Newbattle Abbey which was requisitioned by the War Office in 1939. The camp was used variously during the war, including housing the Royal Army Medical Corps and the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service. In 1945, it was designated Army Formation College Number 1, providing adult education for personnel awaiting demobilisation. The Army left in 1949, allowing the house to re-open as a residential college. The camp now functions as a business park. LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
