St. Catherine's Chapel (1), St. Catherine's Hill, Guildford
Looking up St. Catherine's Hill to the medieval ruined chapel of St. Catherine's. The chapel was built by Richard de Wauncey in the early 14th century, and consecrated in 1317. It was built on the site of an earlier chapel. Richard de Wauncey was Rector of St. Nicolas, the Parish Church of Guildford. It was intended to be a chapel-of-ease to his main church. It provided a place of worship more convenient for people who lived some distance from that church. It seems to have fallen into ruin as long ago as the first half of the 16th century. It has never been replaced, so local worshippers still have to travel to attend church.
