Motorway embankment, Elland
The M62 has been constructed almost at the top of the steep hillside above Elland, and where it crosses a valley this has been filled in by a very high embankment. The latter is still part of the motorway land, so is fenced off from the field on the right-hand side. The other feature that makes it different from the natural hillside is the berms, horizontal ledges containing land drains designed to prevent the material of the embankment from sliding downhill. The embankment is being colonised by trees. Storth Wood is in the middleground, and the heather of 'The Rough' in the foreground.
