Swaffham Prior: former railway station
The 20-mile branch from Cambridge to Mildenhall was built by the Great Eastern Railway in 1884. It closed to passengers in 1962 and to goods two years later. Enough infrastructure survives to make the route along the edge of the fen traceable. Swaffham Prior station building is now a very private house surrounded by trees. Without (I hope) being intrusive, it is easy to catch a glimpse of the red-brick building and a fine piece of GER iron fencing from the end of the gated drive.
