Plumstead Common War Memorial
The war memorial on Plumstead Common dates from 1923 and has the inscription 'To the glorious memory of our fallen comrades of the 8th London Howitzer Brigade Royal Field Artillery who gave their lives in the Great War of 1914 to 1918'. Subsequently the memorial also commemorated the 65th and 118th Field Regiments of the Royal Artillery from the Second World War. The 118th arrived in Singapore two weeks before it fell and most of those listed on their Roll of Honour died in Japanese prisoner of war camps. In the early days, 2-300 Territorial Army soldiers and others marched up to the war memorial from the now demolished St Margaret's Church, but numbers dwindled over the years. In recent years though the numbers attending the annual Remembrance Sunday service have increased with renewed interest in the ceremony. Sadly the metal plate containing the names of those honoured was stolen some years back, but a separate record is kept.
